St Ambrose Catholic Academy Celebrates Transformational Ofsted Success

From ‘Requires Improvement’ to a school thriving in excellence – a story of commitment, care, and community.

At St Joseph Catholic Multi Academy Trust, we’re delighted to share the exceptional outcome of the recent Ofsted inspection at St Ambrose Catholic Academy, carried out in February 2025. The academy has achieved a remarkable turnaround since its last inspection in 2021, moving from a rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ to being judged as ‘Outstanding’ in the area of ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Good’ in all others.

This transformation is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the academy’s leadership, staff, governors, and wider academy community – all underpinned by a strong and supportive partnership with the Trust.

The Ofsted report speaks volumes about St Ambrose’s rich culture, highlighting how “pupils exemplify the school’s values of ‘hope, believe and achieve’” and how the academy has become “a safe haven for many.” Inspectors praised the academy for providing “exceptional pastoral care blended with a wide range of opportunities”—recognising its commitment to nurturing the whole child.

The early years provision, in particular, was celebrated as vibrant and highly effective, helping children get “a flying start on their learning journey.” Pupils across the academy were recognised for achieving well, and the curriculum was described as ambitious and engaging.

The report reflects the success of sustained and strategic improvement, driven in collaboration with the Trust. Ofsted noted how “the school and Trust have improved the curriculum” and invested in high-quality professional development to ensure that “experienced staff with strong subject knowledge bring the curriculum to life.”

Commenting on the outcome, the Trust’s CEO said:

“This result is a moment of great pride for everyone involved with St Ambrose. To see such a positive shift in a relatively short time shows what’s possible when an academy’s community pulls together with belief, purpose and dedication. The leadership team, staff, governors and families have worked tirelessly, and the Ofsted report rightly reflects the love, ambition and commitment that is felt throughout the academy. We are proud to walk alongside them.”

A culture of personal development and inclusion runs deep at the heart of the academy. Inspectors praised how pupils “model tolerance, respect and equality” and develop “high aspirations for future careers,” supported by a wealth of enrichment opportunities. From leadership roles to after-school clubs in music, sport, gardening, textiles and chess, every child is supported to discover and shine in their strengths.

The Trust also celebrates the strength of the partnership between St Ambrose and its families. Ofsted acknowledged how “parents and carers value the close-knit school community and the support that the school gives to them,” with most staff also sharing that they “feel valued and proud to work at this school.”

As a Trust, we are proud to support and champion St Ambrose Catholic Academy’s journey, and we extend our warmest congratulations to every pupil, parent, staff member and governor who made this result possible.
